   In May, the value added of the industrial enterprises above designated size increased by 16.5% year-on-year (8.9% in the same period last year), a drop of 1.3 percentage points from the previous month. From January to May, the added value of industries above designated size increased by 18.5% year-on-year, and the growth rate accelerated by 12.2 percentage points year-on-year. Taking the same period in 2008 as the base period, the average growth rate from January to May in the past two years was 12.2%, of which the average growth rate in May was 12.6%.

   The operation of light industry was basically stable, and the growth rate of heavy industry continued to fall. In May, the added value of light and heavy industries increased by 13.6% and 17.8% year-on-year, respectively, and the growth rate slowed down by 0.5 and 1.6 percentage points respectively from the previous month.

   The growth rate of raw material industrial production has fallen sharply, and the growth of the building materials industry has accelerated. In May, the added value of the raw material industry increased by 14.6% year-on-year, a decrease of 2.7 percentage points from the previous month. The value added of the metallurgical industry increased by 17.2%, a decrease of 4.6 percentage points from the previous month. The value added of the non-ferrous industry increased by 17.9%, a decrease of 2.2 percentage points from the previous month. The output of ten non-ferrous metals was 2.68 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 31.1%; the average daily output was 86,300 tons, a decrease of 0.7% from April. The output of electrolytic copper was 398,000 tons and the output of electrolytic aluminum was 1.42 million tons, an increase of 17.8% and 43.5% respectively year-on-year. The added value of the petrochemical industry increased by 10%, of which the chemical industry increased by 16%, a decrease of 2.8 and 1.3 percentage points respectively from the previous month. Crude oil processing volume was 35.79 million tons, an increase of 14.8%; ethylene was 1.07 million tons, an increase of 35%; chemical fertilizers was 5.84 million tons, an increase of 2.9%. The added value of the building materials industry increased by 20.3% year-on-year, 0.5 percentage points faster than the previous month. The output of cement was 173.58 million tons, an increase of 18%; the output of flat glass was 53.9 million weight boxes, an increase of 17.9%; the output of cement and glass increased from the previous month.

  The decline in the production growth rate of high-energy-consuming industries is greater than that of all industries. In May, the added value of the six major energy-consuming industries increased by 16.5% year-on-year, which was 2.1 percentage points lower than the previous month, and the rate of decline was 0.8 percentage points faster than that of all industries. Among them, the production and supply of electric power and heat, the petroleum processing and coking and nuclear fuel processing industries increased by 14.5% and 8.3% respectively, down 0.3 and 0.9 percentage points from the previous month; the ferrous and non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industries increased by 15.3% and 18.4% respectively. %, down 4.4 and 1.3 percentage points from the previous month; the chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing industry increased by 17%, down 0.9 percentage points from the previous month; the non-metallic mineral products industry increased by 20.6%, 0.2 percentage points faster than the previous month. From January to May, the added value of the six major energy-consuming industries increased by 18.4% year-on-year.

  The growth rate of the eastern and central regions has fallen faster than that of the western regions. In May, the industrial added value of the eastern, central, and western regions increased by 15.1%, 20.5%, and 16.9% year-on-year, respectively, down 1.7, 1.2, and 0.2 percentage points from the previous month. The growth rate of industries above designated size in 18 provinces and cities across the country exceeded 20%. Among the major industrial provinces, Jiangsu, Shandong, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Henan, and Liaoning increased by 13.4%, 16%, 18.7%, 17%, 23% and 18.7% respectively.
